Pressure Washer Not Drawing Detergent? Here Is Why

Nine times out of ten a pressure washer refuses to pull detergent because the wrong nozzle is fitted. The soap siphon only works when pressure at the outlet drops, and a narrow high pressure tip keeps that pressure up, so nothing gets sucked out of the bottle. Swap to the low pressure or soap nozzle first, then work through the other causes below if it still runs clear.

How detergent actually gets into the water

Almost every domestic machine uses a venturi. Water rushing through a narrow throat in the injector body creates a slight vacuum, and that vacuum pulls detergent up the siphon tube and into the flow. It is a passive system with no pump behind it, which is why it is so easily defeated. Anything that raises the pressure downstream of the injector, restricts the tube, or lets air into the line will stop the suction dead.

Some machines siphon from a bottle on a tube, others feed from an onboard tank with a dial, and some use a clip on foam bottle on the end of the lance. The failure points differ slightly, but the physics is the same in all three.

Start with the nozzle

If your washer uses quick connect tips, the detergent tip is usually black and has the widest opening of the set. Fit anything narrower (white 40 degree, green 25, yellow 15, red 0) and the restriction holds back pressure and kills the siphon.

If you have an adjustable lance instead, twisting the head changes between a pencil jet and a fan, and on many models pulling or twisting the front section switches it into low pressure mode. Check the manual for your specific lance, because on some units the low pressure position is not obvious and people assume the machine is faulty when it is simply set to full pressure.

Foam cannons are their own case. A cannon sized for a petrol machine will often refuse to foam on an electric washer that puts out less flow.

Check the siphon tube and its filter

The tube usually has a small mesh filter or weighted foot on the end. Detergent residue dries into a crust on that mesh over a season, and once it does, the weak vacuum cannot draw through it. Pull the tube out and rinse the filter under a hot tap, then squeeze the mesh gently to break up any hardened film.

While the tube is out, look for these:

• Kinks or tight bends where the tube leaves the machine
• Splits near the barb, which let the vacuum pull air instead of liquid
• A loose push fit at the injector port, same problem
• The end of the tube sitting above the liquid level in the bottle

That last one catches people out constantly. A tall narrow bottle tends to let the foot ride up as the level drops.

Thin the detergent down

A venturi has very little lifting power, and thick undiluted cleaner behaves more like syrup than water. Most concentrates are meant to be diluted before they go in the bottle, and even ready mixed patio cleaners can be too heavy on a cold day.

Try diluting roughly one part cleaner to four parts warm water and test again. If suction returns, you have your answer. Never use washing up liquid or household bleach as a substitute, because both can attack pump seals and the injector diaphragm.

Hose length and layout matter

On machines where the injector sits inside the unit, everything after it counts as resistance. Adding a 10 metre extension hose to the standard hose often drops the vacuum enough that detergent stops flowing, even though pressure at the lance still feels fine. Take the extension off and test on the original hose before you condemn the injector.

Height works against you too. If the machine is up on a step and the bottle is on the ground, you are asking the siphon to lift further than it was designed to.

When the injector itself is the fault

If the tube is clear, the nozzle is right and the detergent is thin, the injector is the remaining suspect. Inside it sits a small ball or spring check valve and an O ring, and both suffer from dried detergent and limescale. Some machines let you unscrew the injector body and soak the parts in warm water or a mild descaler. Others are sealed into the pump housing, in which case it is a service job or a replacement part.

Low incoming water supply can mimic an injector fault as well. If the pump is starved, flow through the venturi throat drops and the vacuum weakens. A restricted inlet filter, a partly closed tap or a narrow garden hose can all do this, and the same conditions usually cause pulsing at the lance too.

Rinse the system after every soap job

The single best preventative step is to run clean water through the detergent circuit when you finish. Drop the siphon tube in a bucket of warm water, fit the soap nozzle and run it for thirty seconds or so. That clears concentrate out of the tube, filter and injector before it can dry, and it is the reason some machines still siphon perfectly after ten years while others clog by their second summer.
